The three major Chinese religions today are Taoism, Confucianism and Buddhism. All three are ancient religions pre-dating Christianity and all three are deeply woven into China's communist ideology.
Buddhism, with an estimated 300 million followers worldwide, was introduced into China in the third to sixth centuries AD. This monk was reading quietly in the temple courtyard after taking part in the afternoon prayers.
