This CPD unit has focused on helping children explore their own personal geographies in a local context and has been underpinned by the use of digital map-making.
This is not the only Geographical Association project that has been concerned with the development of personal geographies and geographical imagination and you may want to look at ideas that have been developed by teachers in two previous GA projects: Valuing Places and Where will I live?. Some of this work was developed in secondary classrooms but there is much here that could be developed for use with much younger pupils.
If you haven't already done so, you may also wish to view our CPD unit called My Place, Your Place, Our Place which explores the relationships between identity and place by drawing on some key geographical processes and understanding. If features lots of ideas about how we can help primary aged pupils exlpore their feelings about and relationships with place, and it features a whole section on creative mapping techniques.
You have reached the final page of this unit. If you are committed to the ideas shared here and have used the unit as a distant learning CPD opportunity you might want to gain personal validation for the learning that you have undertaken. It is now possible to do this through the General Teaching Council's Teacher Learning Academy (TLA).
The GA is a TLA Support Partner which means that if you are working towards TLA Stage One or Two verification you can use one or more of these courses to provide the focus for your learning journey.
Alternatively you may be a geography subject leader who has been working through this unit in order to provide support for other members of staff. Perhaps you have used some of the ideas on a staff training day. If so you might be interested in gaining recognition for your school through working towards the Primary Geography Quality Mark.
