This unit aims to support teachers to engage children in quality geography through senses-based creative writing. There are three main classroom sessions. In the first, children record their sense impressions on their own journeys to school. In the second, by putting themselves into images of a distant place, they repeat the process as if they were children in various parts of India. Finally they draw together their local and distant sense impressions in a group
performance piece.
You may decide to use this three-stage process with your children as presented here, as a way into the study of India. Or you may decide to adapt this strategy to study a distant place of your choice for which you can obtain good images of children's journeys to school.
However you use the materials, we hope you will gain a sense of some possible uses of a simple frame to help children to be good writers as well as good geographers. We also want you to reflect on how readily a small number of quality resources can support a good distant place study.
