A vital ingredient for success in any organisation revolves around the ability of the leader to inspire and enthuse colleagues. The same goes for those planning curriculums. All teams require a common and shared purpose; the key is to involve the team in the process along the way.
Enthusiasm and inspiration are very powerful motivators, and both cost nothing! Leaders draw strength and energy from themselves and their colleagues then draw strength from their leadership.
Additionally, there are other considerations when contemplating the role that your team plays in achieving the vision that you have identified for geography.
Communication between the leader and the team, and within the team, is vital if success is to be achieved. Everybody likes to feel involved, that they have a part to play, and nurturing this is a skilful and often time-consuming task.
Goals need to be achievable within the time set, and an effective leader pays due regard to the teaching and non-teaching commitments of colleagues.
Expectations of your team need to be realistic, practical and flexible, and feedback from them should be encouraged in order to maintain the carefully nurtured involvement that you have encouraged.
An effective leader recognises the value of delegating tasks to colleagues; once again this reinforces their involvement and common purpose. However, support is often necessary so you will need to ensure that appropriate forms of support are both available and accessible.
All colleagues may not share the passion that a leader has for a particular task, but this does not mean that they should not be involved. Your team may be able to contribute at different levels; once again, it is helpful to be mindful of their responsibilities and their different personalities so that you can maximise the efforts of your team.
