Course overview

This CPD course for primary teachers will help you raise the standard of geography teaching and learning in your class and school.

Join us to develop your understanding of geography's core knowledge and skills and learn how the subject contributes to whole-school dimensions such as sustainability, global learning and learning outside the classroom.

The day will include a mix of presentations, group discussion and practical activities, including some outdoor work.

Aims and outcomes

By the end of the day you will:

  • Have a better understanding of geography's core knowledge and skills and how they underpin creative learning
  • Know ways in which you can raise the standard of geography in your class and school
  • Understand how geography supports and contributes to the wider curriculum
  • Have a range of practical ideas for planning, assessing and teaching high quality geography.


Course programme

09.00-09.30 Coffee and registration

09.30-11.00 Session 1: Being inspired by geography

  • How and why geography can inspire your pupils and refresh your curriculum
  • Understanding the core components of quality geography provision
  • Using an enquiry approach to teach creatively
  • Developing geography as part of a creative curriculum
  • Investigating how to link to other subjects and whole school dimensions

Update on the current state of play of the curriculum review 

11.00-11.15 Break

11.15-12.45 Session 2: Fun with Fieldwork

  • Understanding locality fieldwork
  • Using and making maps
  • Techniques and tools for being local area detectives
  • Practical fieldwork in the locality

We will try and go out no matter what the weather so please dress accordingly

12.45-13.30 Lunch

13.30-15.30 Session 3: Excellent Geography

  • Evaluating how well your school is doing
  • Indicators in your school for high quality geography
  • Investigating useful geography resources
  • Pain free geography assessment in your class and in your school
  • Planning to improve geography in your class and school

We will use recent examples of work from Quality Mark schools
