About our consultants scheme

GA members are a rich resource of expertise. The GA's publications, journals, web-based resources, CPD events and GA Annual Conference are all made possible through the involvement of GA members who offer their knowledge and experience for others to share. Often this is done informally, for example through the GA's branches and online networks. For more formal CPD the GA has established a growing register of consultants to the GA who can be contacted to provide specialist advice.

Many of the consultants (there are now over 100 around the UK) are available, subject to other commitments, to give talks on a variety of topics related to the teaching and learning of geography. Audiences include special schools, secondary and primary schools, community groups, colleges, societies, businesses and councils.

Consultants to the GA offer a variety of specialist topics such as curriculum development, GIS, fieldwork, global issues, sustainability and risk assessment. Presentations may include talks, lectures, workshops or seminars. The GA is committed to reflective and enquiry led forms of CPD. Consultants are encouraged to involve their audiences through question and answer sessions and discussion. Participants should come away with ideas and tools for further action and self development.

Each consultant has to apply formally to join the consultants to the GA register and applications are vetted by a panel comprising the GA's Chief Executive, GA President and Chair or Vice Chair of the GA Education Committee. You can be confident that the GA will provide you, your school or your organisation with a highly qualified and experienced presenter. 'Your consultant delivered two excellent training sessions to the whole teaching staff. She based the sessions on the needs and priorities of the school - to develop our enquiry-based approach to teaching and learning - and combined it with to our desire to improve teaching of certain areas of geography such as map skills. Both sessions were well organised and well resourced with clear outcomes. They were also highly interactive so that all teachers experienced the learning experience themselves, which is not only more fun but makes it much easier when it comes to actually planning and teaching similar lessons. We are keen to work more closely with your consultant in order to develop our teaching further!'
