How to apply

Applying for a course

Once you have decided that a teaching career is for you then you have to start applying for a course. There are various routes you can take into teaching - make sure you choose the route that is best suited to you at the time of applying. If you are not successful in applying for one type of course you may be able to try a different route.


PGCE (Post Graduate Certificate in Education)
One year course

Undergraduate
Three or four year course
Website: UCAS

SCITT (School Centred Initial Teacher Training)
One year course based mainly in schools
Website: Training and Development Agency for Schools

GTP (Graduate Training Programme)
One year course
Website: Training and Development Agency for Schools
This is a one year course based in a school and you receive a salary. You will either have to respond to an advertisement for the GTP programme, apply direct to a GTP provider or you will need to find a job in a school yourself. To find a GTP provider search the Employment Based Initial Teacher Training Provider (EBITT).
