Furthering the learning and teaching of geography

Getting Experience

Woman in a library

If you're unsure about going into teaching, try one or two of the options below to help you make up your mind. If you get involved in any of these activities then you will also be in a stronger position when it comes to being interviewed for acceptance onto a teacher training course.

Ambassadors Scheme
www.geographyteachingtoday.org.uk/ambassadors/introduction/
This scheme enables you to go into schools as a volunteer and talk to students about various aspects of geography. It would give you valuable personal development skills and great experience to add to your CV. Training is available.

Student Associates Scheme (SAS)
www.tda.gov.uk/sas
This TDA scheme helps you to gain classroom experience whilst continuing with your present studies.

School visits
Go into a school for the age range you are interested in - this could be a school you went to or one in your local area. Go and watch some teachers in the classroom and see what techniques they use.

Talk to teachers
Try to get a feel for the highs and lows of teaching from the people who know best.
