Furthering the learning and teaching of geography

What is school geography like?

The following video clip shows the GA's then Curriculum Leadership Projects Manager Diane Swift talking to teachers about what school geography is about. She focuses on three relevant aspects:

  • The pupils' own personal geographies
  • How geography helps us to explain the interconnectedness that exists in today's world
  • The links between the physical and the human world

The next video clip shows part of a mixed ability Year 9 lesson (13 years old) where students take part in a role play. They developed the idea of trying to make a link between their own lives and climate change with help from the teacher.

The week before the lesson in 2007, Sheffield and other parts of Yorkshire experienced a major flood and so the students decided to use this local event in their presentations. They used an iPod as the basis, a few additional props and wrote a script for a TV programme.

Geography teachers will quite often use role play as a learning tool for students and the way they perform here is fairly typical. The teacher also contributed to ensure that all the learning points were covered.

You will remember having geography lessons when you were at school. You, of course, experienced these from the perspective of a student - from the perspective of a teacher the view is quite different.
