Our Annual Conference features a strong programme of lectures, field visits and hands on workshops designed to equip teachers with new and exciting ideas for classroom practice. It also includes an impressive resources exhibition of materials from leading publishers and suppliers and linked organisations including the Field Studies Council, Ordnance Survey and RGS-IBG; and a programme of social events.
The 2006 Conference takes place 18-20 April at the University of Manchester. For more details and up-to-date information on this prestigious event browse the Annual Conference pages.
Our certificated Professional Development Units are for all phases on a variety of themes and are run by leading professionals.
Three journals
We produce three journals: Primary Geographer is for specialist and non-specialist teachers of geography at primary level; Teaching Geography for geography teachers in secondary school; and Geography for post-16 and higher education geographers.
Through these, subscribers are kept abreast of good practice, practical ideas, guidance, research and resources. Information about each journal can be found here. Online versions of all three journals have recently been added to this site and can be viewed here.
Books and resources
We produce an increasingly wide range of books and resources. These include practical yet authoritative books, such as Learning Through Enquiry by Margaret Roberts, which helps teachers integrate enquiry into key stage 3 learning; books for A-level students in the A-Z Advancing Geography, Changing Geography and Discovering Cities series; and classroom material - including the well-known Barnaby Bear series.
For more details of these and a wealth of other resources, browse the appropriate listings in our online Shop.
Arguing the case
Most humanities teachers agree that a broad and balanced curriculum is something that always appears endangered – such is the concentration of effort on 'core' subjects. The GA engages with policy makers and government ministers to constantly make the case for geography. Whatever the age of your pupils, the Association has produced a number of leaflets to help you make the case for geography in your own school.
In addition, national initiatives, such as Worldwise and GA Awards also help us promote geography to the wider community.
Acting locally and nationally
At their best, the GA’s local Branches embody the notion of 'community practice' by bringing together teachers, academics and pupils. One aim of the GA’s Strategic Plan is to fund initiatives to help teachers get together to find and develop local solutions to particular challenges, which will then be communicated via the website, journals and conferences. Find out more about our Strategic Plan here. Download document here.
