Future of the GA
The Future of the GA

Thank you to everyone who took part in the recent online survey about the future of the Geographical Association. A total of 132 responded to the online questionnaire, with many posting detailed and helpful comments. The website records when the submission is made - whilst there are some early risers, a lot of us are online between 10:00pm and midnight, although I am pleased that no-one posted a submission after midnight!

The results are very significant, and generally in line with the discussions held at Governing Body and Education Committee. Here is a brief summary:

  • 87% strongly agreed or agreed that 'the GA should set up a young people's membership package, which would include activities and materials'
  • 88% strongly agreed or agreed that 'the GA should encourage greater international involvement'
  • a smaller percentage, 71%, strongly agreed or agreed that 'the GA should re-establish a regional structure'
  • perhaps not surprisingly the modal class for 'the GA should aim to buy its own headquarters, with training space and meeting rooms' was neither agree nor disagree, at 30%, with respondents commenting that they knew too little about this issue to pass a judgement
  • there was a very strong vote (85%) against the journals only being available online, despite those voting presumably being comfortable in an online environment
The very strong support for young people's activities and an international dimension has been built into the draft vision statement for the GA, which you can view and comment on below.

A revised version of this statement will be presented to Governing Body in November, for adoption at the AGM at Conference 2008. It will then guide the development of the GA's strategic priorities and associated action plans. In this way, your responses will have directly affected the future direction of the GA - thank you again.

Keith Grimwade
Past President

The Geographical Association: Draft Vision Statement, September 2007

The Geographical Association will be the lead subject association for teachers of geography in England and a national voice for geography, working in partnership with other subject associations and learned societies. It will have members in every school, College and Higher Education Institute and will actively seek members from other countries to create a rich and varied community of professionals. The GA will be a leading provider of continuing professional development, engaged in a wide range of curriculum development projects, and will produce high quality curriculum materials disseminated through its publications, journals and website. It will offer a comprehensive range of support and activities for children and young people to stimulate a lifelong interest in geography. The GA will be an organisation that staff and volunteers want to work for.
