Our Aims

The purpose of the Teacher Education Working Group is to support GA members and others by reviewing the educational landscape as it affects teacher education, looking for patterns, connections, issues and implications and by initiating actions in response. This will involve:

  • Monitoring the impact of changes to teacher education affecting initial teacher education and continuous professional development for teachers of geography for the 3-19 age range.
  • Initiating discussions, surveys and other activities
  • Disseminating outcomes through conference presentations and publications
  • Representing the Geographical Association in matters related to Teacher Education.

What we do

We meet each term and our membership represents as wide a range of ITE interest as possible. This enables us to receive information on developments affecting ITE from a number of directions and to bring varied experience to focus on them. Reponses have included surveys, articles, published materials, conferences and contributions to the GA’s Annual Conference, joint working with other organisations and representations to official bodies.

We provide guidance and support in relation to curriculum change by delivering workshops and lectures at the GA's Annual conference, contributing sessions to the PGCE/NQT event at conference and helping to organise and contribute to regional conferences.

During 2007-08 our plans include the following:

  • Liaise with OS in an attempt to get maps for primary ITE departments in the same way that secondary PGCE courses were funded by OS last year.
  • Continued dialogue with TDA regarding the allocation of numbers to PGCE courses. Discuss with the TDA the effect declining numbers has on the supply of good quality geography teachers on a regional basis. Some PGCE courses are set to close; this affects teacher supply as well as affecting research in geographical education in HEI.
  • TEWG will continue to respond to consultations as and when they arise during the year.
  • TEWG members as usual contributed to two sessions at conference. In March 2008 Margaret Roberts ran a session during the PGCE/NQT day and Fran Martin gave a lecture called 'Global learning for sustainable development'. There was also a display board illustrating the work we have done during the year.
  • We intend to submit a proposal for a publication on action research.
  • TEWG will monitor curriculum changes which may lead to closer links with GA phase committees. There are lots of curriculum changes happening in a short time span, Key Stage 3, GCSE, AS/A2 & diplomas. TEWG will work to monitor and contribute to curriculum change as and when appropriate.

Other information

Our members include higher education tutors involved in ITE and continuing professional development, primary and secondary school teachers involved in ITE and CPD, a Local Authority adviser involved in CPD and a former Ofsted ITT Inspector for geography.
