The purpose of the Secondary Phase Committee is to support GA members concerned with Geography in Key Stages 3 and 4 and to represent the views and interests of these members.
|
- Monitor the views, interests, concerns and issues facing secondary geography members of the GA. In addition, monitor the state of health of secondary geography as indicated by data on numbers and assessment evidence.
- Initiate ideas for engaging and challenging teaching and learning ideas in the secondary geography classroom.
- Disseminate these ideas through workshops at the annual GA Conference, the GA website, and occasional articles and contributions to GA publications such as Teaching Geography
- Represent the views, interests, concerns and issues facing secondary geography members of the GA at the GA Education Committee, and externally to bodies such as QCA.
- Promote geography to teachers, pupils, schools and the wider community as a relevant and exciting subject
Over the last year we have led workshops at GA Conference on Leading the Geography Department and Teaching Exceptional Students; led teacher-to teacher sessions at GA annual Conference; published articles in Teaching Geography on topics such as team teaching, Valuing Places, the geography of crime, using ICT to enrich Geography, leading the geography department/self assessment and field work; represented the GA in the QCA review of the Key Stage 3 curriculum; and published numerous resources on the GA website.
|
The SPC led three workshops at the 2008 GA Annual Conference at the University of Surrey, Guildford on 27-29 March:
- Breaking down Boundaries
- A Teacher's Toolkit for Key Stage 3
- Putting the Mystery into Geography
Resources from these workshops and other conference lectures and workshops can be downloaded on the GA Annual Conference page.

| Notes of Secondary Phase Committee Meeting - 7 June 2008 |
Congratulations to Alan and Louise!
The committee was pleased to hear that two SPC members Alan Parkinson and Louise Ellis had both deservedly received this year's Ordnance Survey Award for Excellence in Geography Teaching from the RGS (see photo to right). In addition, Alan has also recently been appointed to the full time role of Curriculum Development Leader and is set to help guide the second phase of the Action Plan for Geography.

KS3 CfBT support update
The committee was also provided with an update on the proposed CfBT sponsored support for current changes to Key Stage Three. Now the first wave of national conferences draws to a close, the intention is to develop, extend and support local networks of teachers to provide the more personalised support that was not possible within the restrictions of the national conferences. In an effort to anticipate what teachers of geography grappling with these changes will need most, some of the support offered will focus around helping departments meet the requirements for GIS and out of class learning. The SPC were able to offer their suggestions on what shape this support could take.
Working with the AEWG
There was a successful joint meeting with the Assessment and Examinations Working Group. Both working groups were conscious that during this current period of curriculum change there will be an increasing number of issues arising that will overlap between these two GA committees. With this in mind both committees are pleased to announce a forthcoming article in Teaching Geography which will summarise the key features of the new KS4 specifications offered by awarding bodies and which is co-authored by Emma Johns of the SPC and Phil Wood, chair of the AEWG. Members of both committees are currently working to produce additional resources that will support GA members through this period of curriculum change.
2009 Manchester Conference
The committee was able to invite Margaret Roberts to the meeting who outlined the key theme of the 2009 GA Annual Conference in Manchester – Investigating Geography. Plans are already underway for the three workshops that the SPC are intending to offer at the conference – we look forward to seeing you there!
