  • Andrew Lee has created www.thinkingeography.com, a new website for geography students and teachers which provides geographical reflections on current events. It provides video and voice podcasts (geocasts) as well as a blog environment called geograffiti where users can contribute to debates. It is possible to subscribe to the site so that new programmes, which typically last for two minutes, are automatically downloaded to iTunes. Geograffiti blog is also an RSS feed which can automatically update on users PCs. Teachers might even ask students to listen to a podcast online before answering a set question. There are further plans afoot to create an online prep environment too.

  • ISWG members are now able to keep in touch via their very own Virtual Learning Environment at http://iswg.geography.org.uk. Contact Andrew Lee for username and password details.

  • You may be interested in the GA Oxford Branch which has close links with the ISWG. Find out more about this Branch and their activities on the GA Oxford Branch page.

  • Our Aims

The Independent Schools Working Group represents the interests of geography teachers in public and preparatory schools within the GA and aims to increase the membership of Independent School geographers to the GA.

    What we do

We have a distinct membership drawn from geography teachers in public and preparatory schools. In addition to representing their interests within the GA, we organise in-service training opportunities and produce an annual newsletter Notes and Queries to members of ISWG.

Each summer we hold an annual conference, which includes workshops, forums, lectures and a publishers' display. We also organise a range of other conferences, which are listed on the Events page.

    Other information

We always welcome new members on ISWG, for further details please contact Alan Hancock, Uppingham School, Uppingham, Leicestershire LE15 9QE.

Chartered Geographer status: The RGS-IBG has introduced the professional status of Chartered Geographer for suitably qualified and experienced individuals. It is particularly relevant to teachers in the Independent sector and other educators because it complements the government’s Teachers’ Standards Framework and CPD strategy. Further information about the Chartered Geographer and details of how to apply can be found on the RGS-IBG website.
