Our Aims

GAIN was formed to represent the views and needs of local education authority (LEA) and consultant advisers and inspectors of geography. GAIN aims to:
  • Provide a network for its members, whereby initiatives and support strategies can be planned, shared and disseminated;
  • Enhance the status of geography within the curriculum;
  • Provide a means of communication between the GA and LEAs and to inform other relevant bodies such as QCA and Ofsted;
  • Advise the GA on matters relating to the inspection of schools, the development of geographical education within schools and colleges, the national curriculum and assessment arrangements, in-service training requirements and curriculum development materials.

What we do

We organise a National Conference at the School of Education, Birmingham University at the end of the autumn term. The conference consists of a range of activities including discussion groups, keynote presentations and workshops. The Network is also involved in the organisation of a residential Annual Conference in conjunction with the National Association of Humanities Advisers, National Association of Advisers for History and Environmental Education Advisers Association.

We hold regular meetings with professional officers from QCA regarding the development of geography in the curriculum. GAIN also provides geography specialist training for Ofsted inspectors.

Other information

From our National Conferences and annual writing groups we produce occasional papers, some of which can be downloaded as PDFs below

We also produce and circulate a twice-yearly Newsletter. Download a copy of the Spring 2005 issue here. If you are an adviser or inspector and do not receive copies regularly, please email Frances Soar at the GA.
