Introduction

It is due to the continued high level of voluntary energy contributed by its members that the Geographical Association continues to achieve so much, particularly in relation to the breadth of its activities. The Geographical Association has two main committees:

The Governing Body
The Governing Body has overall responsibility for the Association and its current and future well-being. Its role includes the prudent stewardship of financial resources on behalf of the Association, in accordance with current law and its charitable aims.

The Governing Body for 2008/09 is:

  • President: Mrs M Roberts
  • Past President: Mr J Westaway
  • Senior Vice President: Mr John Halocha
  • Junior Vice President & Chair Education Committee: Dr J Hopkin
  • Named Trustees: Mr J Krause, Mr P Fox
  • Honorary Treasurer/Named Trustee: Mr B Ellis
  • Elected members: Mr M Higginbottom, Mrs T Horler, Ms H Martin
  • Co-option: Mr M Shevill, Mr N Simmonds, Mr M Bradford
The GA's Honorary Vice Presidents are Professor D Massey, Mr B Saunders and Dr V Lawrence.

The Education Committee
The Education Committee has responsibility for formulating the GA’s educational policy, guiding the Governing Body on priorities for the educational work of the Association and ensuring that provision is made for all aspects of geographical education.

The Governing Body and Education Committee are each able to create subcommittees, working groups and other groupings for specific purposes. With regard to the Education Committee these include:

Early Years and Primary Phase Committee
Secondary Phase Committee
Post-16 & HE Phase Committee

Ten Working Groups as well as Boards for journals, website, publications and conference (collectively termed ‘Communications Boards’):
