Teaching Geography Through Citizenship: Designing Identity
This session explored the contribution of geography to citizenship issues and centred on a practical classroom activity to design an ID card. The workshop introduced teachers to recent work from within geography on the concepts and experiences of 'race', identity politics and 'whiteness'.

We are interested to hear more about what kind of activities you would like to see the GA Citizenship Working Group undertake over the next year. We are planning the following activities:
- Developing teaching resources on citizenship through geography
- Initiating a competition for pupils to generate their own resources for citizenship through Geography - the 'GeoCitizen' award
- Contributing to QCA curriculum reviews
Organising events to bring together teachers, pupils, university students and lecturers and policy-makers
- Developing the GeoCitizen website

The CWG was established in September 2006 to support GA members in the development of the citizenship dimension of geography education. We aim to help advise and forge ahead with clarifying, strengthening and developing the links and overlaps that clearly exist between geography and citizenship education.
|
The CWG meets three times a year. We hope to achieve our aims through:
- Initiating and promoting projects that involve the effective development of citizenship to enhance the teaching and learning of geography.
- Researching and providing information and advice about citizenship developments to members of the GA in journal publications, the GA website and conference; through presentations, workshop and correspondence.
- Monitoring developments in citizenship education and report these to GA members and the Education Committee.
- Representing the GA at a variety of fora, for example with government, other subject associations and voluntary organisations.
|
The CWG is made up of a range of primary and secondary geography teachers, geography educators, higher education geographers and geographers working in the public realm.

Viewpoint articles
In 2007 the group commissioned a number of short viewpoint articles from geographers Jon Anderson, Kye Askins, Ian Cook, Luke Desforges, James Evans, Maria Fannin, Duncan Fuller, Helen Griffiths, David Lambert, Roger Lee, Julie MacLeavy, Lucy Mayblin, John Morgan, Becky Payne, Jessica Pykett, David Roberts and Tracey Skelton on 'What is geography's contribution to making citizens?'. These can be read in full below:
|
We have subsequently pulled these pieces together to form an article for the re-launch issue of Geography. GA members can login to download the artcile here.
Date of next meeting: Saturday 29 March at 2:00pm (CWG stand at GA Annual Conference)
