The AEWG have prepared a summary of their thoughts on the value of coursework in GCSE Geography. The document can be downloaded from the 'Assessment' section of the Secondary page. (29.03.06)

Our Aims

The remit of the Assessment and Examinations Working Group is to maintain an overview of developments in assessment and examinations and to advise the GA Education Standing Committee and members.

What we do

We meet three times a year, twice in Birmingham and once in London, to discuss contemporary issues in assessment at all phases of education. We also try to devote some time to improvements in assessment practice.

We have a regular ‘Assessment Matters’ column in Teaching Geography (edited by John Hopkin), and we make occasional contributions to Primary Geographer. We are always on the lookout for new material on assessment, so if you have produced something do send it to us.

We have also produced publications on assessment – details of which can be viewed in the GeographyShop, and contributed a special supplement on assessment to the October 2001 issue of Primary Geographer.

The results of further research and development of the theme of gender and attainment were published in Teaching Geography during 2004. Wherever possible these include potential material from a Best Practice Research Initiative on assessment.

In order to identify and monitor trends associated with performance indicators in geography during 2004 and 2005 we collected and evaluated data on Key Stage 3, GCSE, AS and A2-level results from the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority and awarding bodies. These results culminated in articles, pamphlets and the publication of research data.

Other information

AEWG is a mixture of teachers from primary, secondary and post-16 backgrounds, from advisory services and higher education. New Members are always welcome.
