Our Aims
ESDSIG exists to further the aims of the GA with particular regard to the teaching of environmental and sustainable development education through geography, and the contribution that geography can make to ideas for creating and adopting more sustainable lifestyles.
What we do
We hold regular meetings at which members (teachers, lecturers, researchers, students or consultants) exchange ideas and information about developments in the themes that are relevant to geography teachers. This information is passed on to the geography community through the GA Annual Conference, via correspondence and articles in GA and through other journals.
We represent the interests of the GA by responding to initiatives, policies and programmes on environmental education and sustainable development education. These include:
- UNED-UK: Education Task Force
- Council for Environmental Education
- QCA: recommendatations for the new national curriculum
The group has contributed to a number of GA publications, which can be viewed in the GeographyShop, and regularly contribute articles to Teaching Geography.
A major part of the Group's work is to arrange seminars, workshops, field trips and lectures at the GA's Annual Conference. These are designed to add to the debate on the role of environmental and sustainable development education within geography and the curriculum and to demonstrate how these themes can be integrated into geography teaching.
We will continue to work with partners in higher education institutions, local education authorities and environmental centres to ensure the delivery of ESDE issues.
