Past Event Reports

Cheese and Wine event
Tuesday 8 July 2008

On Tuesday 8 July the Tyne and Wear branch held a cheese and wine event for all local teachers and Northumbria University lecturers, to promote the GA and show how the GA and the university could together help schools and teachers. The evening was introduced by the Chairperson, Lisa Conlan, who outlined the committee members and the national GA website with links to the branch webpage. Steve Rawlinson then outlined the project that the branch has been working on for the past two years for the national GA entitled '8 Way Thinking' using the Ouseburn River in Newcastle upon Tyne as the case study. Many teachers found this format an informative and interesting way of teaching about a particular place.

The many lecturers who have volunteered to work with the GA introduced themselves and announced the talk titles and dates that will be held from October 2008 to February 2009. Overall the evening was a great success and many teachers were interested in coming to future meetings and bringing their sixth form students with them to the forthcoming talks. Many thanks to everyone who attended!

Vulnerability and Climate Change - the Development Challenge
Wednesday 30 April 2008

Professor Phil O'Keefe gave a fascinating talk about humanitarian action in a divided world using Mount Kilimanjaro as an example. The talk was attended very well by university lecturers, teachers and A Level students from surrouding schools. Download the PowerPoint presentation that was used in this talk:

Branch Update - Autumn 2007

Since September the Tyne and Wear GA Branch has been very busy! We have been enjoying a cultural mixture of music from Africa and the USA, and wine from the many vineyards of Europe.

Graham Mowl (Course Leader, Northumbria University) and I held a talk in September regarding the Geogaphy of Music and how space and place can affect where music is made and listened to, which was then linked with how geography affects the creation of music. The main theme was the movement of West African music to the USA through the slave trade and the geographical influcenes which changed the music eventually to Blues and Jazz. This was a very popular session and was attended by both primary and secondary school teachers and university lecturers. Everyone agreed that this interesting topic showed how a subject area from university can be taught in schools and encouraged the promotion of the new curriculum for September 2008.

Terry Douglas (lecturer at Northumbria University) held a wonderfully interesting session in December regarding the Geography of Wine with specific reference to red wines. The discussions held were of interest to both wine connoisseur and geographer alike as the tasting was linked to where the wine was from and whether the climate and land of the vineyards influenced the taste of the wine. As this session was so popular it was encouraged to have an annual session tasting different wines and the geographical affects on the taste and colour.

Thank you to bothe Graham Mowl and Terry Douglas for their continued support of the GA.

The Tyneside Branch of the GA has now been renamed to the Tyne and Wear Branch, as we felt that the GA covers areas surrounding the two rivers.

Climate Change
Thursday 10 May 2007

On Thursday 10 May, Peter Hale from Climate Concern UK visited Northumbria University to give a talk to the GA Tyneside Branch entitled 'Climate Change - a Threat to Mankind?'.

The talk was well attended by A-level students, teachers, university students and lecturers. Areas that were covered during the talk included problems that cause global warming, different people's views on the topic, how the Kyoto Agreement has or has not affected Global Warming and Climate Change, and how we as individuals can combat the effects.

All the attendees found the speaker most interesting and the A-level students gained useful information for their forthcoming exam. An altogether enjoyable talk that inspired much debate and discussion.
