Event Report

Members of the Isle of Thanet Branch enjoyed their usual varied programme of events over the past year, including a series of lectures and a number of special functions to celebrate the Branch's Golden Jubilee.

Twenty members attended the Branch annual holiday, to Tenby in Wales. Twenty-three visited the new World Garden at Lullingstone Castle, Eynsford, Kent.
World Garden

The idea for the World Garden came to Tom Hart Dyke whilst he was held captive by armed guerrillas for nine months in the Columbian jungle, where he had been on an orchid hunting expedition. He wanted to create a garden, to be housed in a two acre walled site at his home at Lullingstone, which would display plants from all over the world.

The garden itself is entered through a moon gate in the wall and is laid out in the form of a map of the world, with each continent separated by gravel pathways. Each continent is planted with species native to that continent, and although the garden has only been open for a short time, the plants are many and varied. Definitely a 'must' for geographers and gardeners alike!
