KS2-3 transition

Using GIS in your lessons

Andrew Lickley provides a demonstration of the free GIS package, Locate, followed by the chance to create a GIS activity for your own school. Places available on a first come first served basis. Note: there may be a small additional charge for this event.

Topics covered:
  • Starting your new Key Stage 3. Please bring along a new innovation that you have made and be prepared to share it.
  • Other new developments. GCSE and A level
  • Makutano Junction. Rob Unwin and Rimas Morris will be leading a session on this DFID funded project using a Kenyan soap opera called Makutano Junction. It offers a new and exciting way to teach about Kenya and Rimas can offer free workshops in schools. Go to the project website for more details.


  • The University of Sheffield Geography Department Centenary Lectures

    Sheffield based GA members may be interested in two upcoming lectures at the University of Sheffield's Department of Geography. The lectures are being held as part of a series marking the department's centenary year. The two lectures are as follows:

    Teaching about socio-economic inequality in Sheffield at KS4
    Thursday 15 May 2008, 4:30pm - 5:30pm
    Birley Community College, Thornbridge Avenue, Sheffield
    In this talk Danny Dorling from the University of Sheffield showcased some of the resources available for showing pupils how social inequalities are portrayed in Sheffield, across Britain and worldwide. Publically available websites were explained, including the Worldmapper site of which the speaker is an author. Similarly the site Human Geography of the UK was introduced, and some of Sheffield city's own websites. A batch of hardcopy posters and a copy of Life in Britain (a Joseph Rowntree Foundation learning resource) were brought along as freebies.
