| Golden Jubilee Celebrations - 2007 |
This has been a very special year for the Plymouth Branch as we celebrated our Golden Jubilee anniversary, having been founded in 1957. We have enjoyed an excellent series of lectures this year with the official celebration to mark the event being held on Friday 19 October. This took place in the presence of the Deputy Lord Mayor and the Deputy Lady Mayoress, invited representatives from the University of Plymouth, University College Plymouth St Mark and St John, the Royal Geographical Society and an excellent turn out of our members.
The evening opened with a sherry reception for the invited guests and committee members hosted by the Chairman. The formal part of the programme commenced with the anniversary lecture entitled 'Literary Landscapes of the British Isles: a new regional geography?' which was delivered by Dr Derek Spooner, a Past President of the Geographical Association and a member of the Branch.
Following the lecture there was the presentation of an Outstanding Service Certificate to Wilfred Harrison by Dr Spooner. Another Certificate has been awarded, posthumously, to Jack Pope who was a founder member of the Branch in 1957 and who sadly died last April. This will go to his family. A third Certificate is to go to Helen Southern who unfortunately was unable to be with us on the evening.

After the presentation, the guests and members adjourned to enjoy a memorable buffet supper. It was generally agreed to have been a very successful evening and a fitting climax to our celebratory year.
