Roy Metcalfe - Outstanding Service Award
On 11 March 2010, the Brighton & District Branch was delighted to present Roy Metcalfe with an Outstanding Service Award.
Roy was a founder member of the Branch in 1952 and was Secretary from 1952 to 1961, Chairman from 1962 to 1964 and an active committee member until his retirement from these duties in 2009. He also lectured and led field excursions on topics related to the East Sussex Coast between 1958 and 1978 and in 1997 was author of the Branch history.
Roy has been a tremendously important figure in the local area and his background in planning makes him unusual with most other committee members being from academic / education backgrounds.
In recognition of his work, he was made a life member of the local branch at his retirement and then received the Outstanding Service Award. It was fitting that the presentation should take place after a lecture on the Cuckmere Estuary Restoration Project as Roy helped set up the Seven Sisters Country Park back in the late 1960s.
Roy is pictured receiving the award and one of Branch treasurer Alan Grey's superb photos of Cuckmere Haven.
