About the GA

We have received many requests for a leaflet introducing the GA, its aims and its activities. To meet this demand, we have published an A4 leaflet that folds into three for mailing, or can be used as an A4 poster. A PDF can be downloaded below, or if you would like hard copies, please contact Frances Soar (Tel: 0114 2960088).

Introduction

The Geographical Association (GA) is a subject association with a mission to further the teaching of geography and to communicate the value of learning geography for all. We have around 7,000 memberships including teachers in primary and secondary schools and further education, academic geographers, universities and teacher educators and trainers. Thus, our Association crosses academic divides and can claim to be a specialist community of practice.

The GA's core activities are financed by its membership subscriptions. The Association was not set up by government or any other agency, but was formed by five geographers in 1893 and remains to this day an independent unincorporated association. Our ability to serve our members and the cause of geography is therefore dependent on the support of teachers of geography – support us in supporting you!

A small body of professional Staff, based at the Association’s Sheffield headquarters, and Officers run the GA in conjunction with its members, who are generally enthusiastic and committed educationalists.

In many ways the original purpose of the GA remains our core business: sharing ideas and learning from each other. In the beginning, a group of teachers wanted to get together and exchange 'lantern slides' and ideas on how such technology could support teaching. Today, new technology allows the GA to make a range of material including, e.g. teaching and learning resources, available to a wider audience.

As part of our mission, we are consciously taking steps to be inclusive and serve the needs of all teachers of geography, whatever the individual's particular enthusiasms. Our purpose is to seek out, nurture and support excellence in geography teaching and ensure the education service understands the power of geography to serve educational goals. It aims to achieve this through a range of activities, details of which can be found here.

What is the GA for?

At a recent conference, David Lambert, CE of the Geographical Association, presented information about the present roles of the GA and raised questions about its changing roles and functions. You can download his PowerPoint Presentation and accompanying paper below:

The Future

The GA would like all teachers of geography to become members of the Association. The recent pronouncements by the Secretary of State for Education, about how the excitement and enjoyment in education so often flows from the subject specialists' passion which drives excellent teaching, are a source of great encouragement: subject associations have a central part to play.
