On 07.06.10 the Government announced that development of the new Diplomas will cease immediately. Further information is available on the DfE website.
The Diploma is a new qualification that aims to combine theoretical study with practical experience. It has been designed to equip young people with the experiences, knowledge and skills necessary for the fast changing world they are growing up in, and to be flexible enough to prepare them for either a job or further study. There are 17 subjects, or lines of learning, covered by the Diploma. These are being introduced in phases and all will be available across the country by 2011.
Geography departments have a central role to play in helping teaching and learning communities to plan, deliver and evaluate components of the new Diplomas from foundation through to advanced level. This area of the website is intended to help you do this. Currently, it is divided into three sections: one focused on the Diplomas as a whole and the other two on specific Diplomas with substantial geographic content: 'Construction and the Built Environment' and 'Environment and Land Based Studies'. These will be added to in future as other diplomas are rolled out.
